Mid-Century Modern Tables: Give me Bling!

If you have followed along with my blog, or have seen my facebook posts, you might recall seeing the Quasius Cabinet "series" that helped kick off my business launch.   At the time I was so excited about the buzz it stirred  that I decided to choose a "runner-up" piece.   Karl Ellis, a friend of mine,  submitted a variety of her pieces, and I got such a kick out of reading her messages and seeing all her photos (with her dog in every single one), that I wanted to surprise her!  Karl dropped off her tables at my "workshop" last week and the project is underway.....

I chose Kara's pair of mid-century modern side tables.  She received them years ago and envisions a crisp, glossy white exterior with pops of bling and a bit of color.  Her bling preference is silver....so I am making a shift from my usual gold, to the shiniest silver I can get my hands on, because as Kara specified, "mirror-like" and "super shiny"!

Here is a photo of one of the tables before I began....

The legs needed a little help...they were rusting a bit and looking worn.   Kara was not in any way attached to the drawer pulls (this table is missing one) and is hoping to replace those.  We talked about adding a fun geometric pattern on the sides of the drawer as well, where a pop of color will be added.   To date, I've gotten as far as sanding, priming, and painting the drawers....below is a before shot of a drawer.....

I removed the hardware and used wood filler to fill in the holes left behind.  The plan is to add a single nob on each drawer.

Above they are primed and ready to be sanded and covered in the first coat of paint...I chose a vibrant pink to line the drawers.   Kara loves pink about as much as I do.

As you can see I use high-tech paint containers for all my projects......(I will never throw away a cottage cheese container again!).  They are great for this purpose.

On to the front of the drawers.....Kara loves silver shine.  She requested a shiny silver base, with a white overlay....hmmm....I have to say this is new to me!  I've never painted anything silver before, nor have I worked with "overlays".   Good!  A learning opportunity.   So here's my first shot at it....I went to Hobby Lobby and found some metal "craft" sheets....see below for photos....these are the "overlays" I'm referring to....

I cut the sheet to size for each drawer front.   I thought by cutting them a bit smaller than the drawer, the silver would have more chance to "shine".

Then I primed each metal piece using a spray-on primer.   (easier than painting it on!)

The bottom interior of the drawers is not yet complete....I am doing a little searching for the perfect liner.   After some experimenting and trial and error to achieve "shine", I am happy with the result of the drawer fronts....

Next I began tackling the sides of the drawers.  The plan is for a fun geometric pattern with a pop of color.  So far, I've just painted them white.   Inspiration struck late last night and I hope to get to it later today.....

The metal overlays are now a crisp white, and the legs have their bling.  Then, it's on to priming and painting the tables.   I'll be posting another update later this week.....and may even be done with both tables by then.  Stay tuned......I can't wait to see how they turn out....
