Giving Thanks: Week #4 (thrift store treasures)

Thrift stores serve many purposes and I am so thankful for them!  At one time or another many of us have utilized their services.  Whether we have donated items after a good house cleaning, needed something we didn't want to pay full price for (like costumes...or anything!), enjoyed browsing a time or two (for me that number is probably 4,127), or enjoyed the thrill of finding that unexpected "thing", it is a win-win for many!

During this final week of Novo Decor Co.'s Giving Thanks series I especially want to recognize thrift stores for all they provide and do for our communities.  So today I"m sharing with you some of my favorite finds that may hopefully inspire you to give "thrifting" a try.  If you've never "thrifted" before, I highly recommend you do at least once in your lifetime!   If you are lucky, you may find an item in its original package, or with the price tag still attached! Love it when that happens.   With all that said, here are some of my top thrifted items:

1.  Chair:   This chair has great potential. The legs need cleaning and a little spray paint.  The seat needs new upholstery.  After that this chair is like new!  And guess what?  It cost $5.00....

2.  Globes!  I really really really like globes.  Their colors, different sizes, and character really add a fun punch to any room.  A brand new globe will set you back $35.00-$65.00 dollars (or more). I don't pay more than $7 for a globe.  And what's even better than a globe?  A group of globes displayed together.....

3.  Textiles (like towels, sheets, blankets, window panels, pillows).  I am a little picky about what textiles I buy at second-hand stores, however, sometimes an item stands out for whatever reason, and I will go for it!  After a run through in the wash, the item is like new and smelling great.  In this example, I found a velvet-y NAVY blue accent pillow.  Navy is a big favorite. Brand new this pillow would probably start at $25.00.  I paid $1.99 for it.....

4.  Chair.  I have a thing with chairs.  I am always looking at them and wish I could take them all home with me!  I found this chair for $5.00.  It is a great example of a quick and easy project.  All it needs is upholstery.  The chair does not need a drop of paint.  The original wood finish is beautiful.......

5.  Bar Cart:  These bar carts are showing up everywhere.  You will find them at Target and a number of other stores that carry home furnishings and decor.  A new bar cart has a minimum price tag of $100.00.  Luck struck one day, and this cart was found at Goodwill for only $7.00. These carts serve multiple purposes and can be used in any room of the house...not just for "bar" items.....

6.  Baskets and wire "storage" items:  I almost always look in the basket sections when I'm out thrifting.  Baskets and wire crates can get pricey brand new...unless you hit the 50% off sale at Hobby Lobby, OR, find them at thrift shops!   Chunky baskets like the one below are a great find....especially when they cost $2.00

It can be overwhelming to walk into a thrift store; especially not knowing where to begin.  My purpose for this post was not only to recognize and give thanks for our area thrift stores (and the great finds!), but to give you some ideas of things to look for next time you go out thrifting.   Another tip to keep in mind: you may not see anything that interests you at all.  No problem.   My advice is to try again the following week because donations are always coming in, and you never know what treasures will be added to the mix.

If you were to purchase these six featured items new, you would pay approximately $355.00. If you purchased these same items at a thrift store, you would pay $25.99.   Happy Thrifting!

Do you have a thrift store "treasure"?  Are you a thrift store "regular" and if so would you have any tips for a novice thrifter?  Do you have any questions about the process?   Just ask!
